Design education and employment

  • The UK leads the world in design education. There are approximately 840 design courses in the UK.
  • The UK has the most design students in Europe and is ranked fourth in the world. In total, 7 per cent of all students in UK higher education were enrolled in a creative arts & design course in 2011/12. These numbers have been steadily growing over the last five years. In 2010, there were approximately 55000 undergraduates studying design in the UK.
  • The UK has some of the best design schools in the world. They include the London College of Communication, Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, Saïd Business School - University of Oxford, and the Royal College of Art.
  • UK universities have developed cutting-edge multidisciplinary programmes that link business and design. For example, at Imperial College London, design has been incorporated in the MBA delivered with the Royal College of Art.
  • According to DCMS statistics from July 2018, there were approximately 160,000 product, graphic and fashion design jobs in the UK creative economy.
